Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae. The disease predominantly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Left untreated, the disease may cause progressive and permanent disabilities. This 中国体育彩票app下载 Day of World Leprosy is an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and call for an end to leprosy-related stigma and discrimination. World Leprosy Day always takes place on the last Sunday of January. This date was chosen by French humanitarian, Raoul Follereau as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi, who did much work with people affected by leprosy and died at the end of January 1948.

As a part of World Leprosy Day, 4th year BSc Nursing students of MCON and the Department of Community Health Nursing collaborated with the NSS Unit of MCON to organise an essay writing competition on the theme “Innovative Strategies to Beat Leprosy” on February 3, 2024, between 4 pm and 5 pm in the Community Health Nursing Laboratory, 4th floor, MCON.

A total of 27 students participated in the event, and all the participants were appreciated with an e-certificate for their participation, and the best two essays were awarded certificates and prizes. The first place was won by Mr Bony P. Thomas, and the second prize was won by Ms Helen Anna Joseph, a 4th year BSc Nursing student from MCON, MAHE, 中国体育彩票app下载. The program contributed to SDGs 3 and 4. Mrs. Jeyalakshmi K, Assistant Professor, MCON, and Mr. Vinish V, NSS Coordinator, MCON, coordinated the program.
