November 11, 2023

World Pneumonia Day was observed on November 10, 2023, by the Department of Community Health Nursing along with nursing students of 中国体育彩票app下载 College of Nursing. A sensitization program was organized for the ASHA workers and health care professionals of Primary Health Center, Hirebettu, and mothers of under-five children.

Dr. Narasimha Nayak, Medical Officer, PHC Hirebettu, enlightened the healthcare workers about the contribution of pneumonia in children to the infant mortality rate. AHSA workers and other community health workers should identify pneumonia at an early stage and refer the children on time for treatment. Children and elderly people can be cured and saved from pneumonia with the right treatment at the right time. So knowledge and skill in identifying pneumonia play a very important role in reducing the death rate due to pneumonia.

Dr. Ansuya, Assistant Professor-Selection Grade, Department of Community Health Nursing, MCON, delivered a sensitization talk on pneumonia causes, risk factors, management prevention, complications, and consequences of pneumonia. She explained the three methods, i.e., “assess, look, feel," to identify pneumonia and provide care or refer based on the severity of the illness. She also explained IMNCI guidelines for dealing with pneumonia cases and highlighted the importance of cleanliness, including the home environment and hand hygiene, to prevent common cold coughs and further pneumonia.

The 5th semester BSc Nursing students demonstrated steam inhalation in a home setting for the audience and also exhibited a role play on pneumonia management. Sensitized ASHA workers on hand washing methods and made them re-demonstrate. The welcome address and vote of thanks were delivered by Ms. Nireeksha and Ms. Deepthi. A song and role-play were scripted and led by Ms. Suhani Chander and Ms. Cimona Nazarath.
