Neonatology division at Kasturba medical college, 中国体育彩票app下载 is a 45(30 Intensive care + 15 Intermediate care) bedded tertiary care referral unit for the surrounding 8 districts of two neighbouring states Karnataka and Kerala with ability to care for the most complex patients.

Average occupancy of the unit is around 1500 admissions per year comprising extreme preterm neonates, perinatal asphyxia, neonates with respiratory distress, neonates with metabolic problems, congenital malformations, genetic disorders, surgical conditions of the neonates including cardiac surgery for complex congenital heart diseases.

Neonatology division have 30 intensive care beds (Includes 4 beds for septic neonates), 15 intermediate care beds and routine postnatal care wards with full occupancy throughout the year. Unit is equipped with mechanical ventilation, non -invasive ventilation, High frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, total parenteral nutrition, whole body cooling, cerebral function monitor (CFM), bedside echocardiography and cranial ultrasound,. ROP screening, Hearing screening, Critical congenital heart disease screening and Metabolic screening for 7 common disorders using DBS are routinely done in the unit. We provide antenatal consultations to high risk pregnancies. We have a an excellent multidisciplinary support team which consists of respiratory therapists, paediatric surgery, neurology, cardiology and cardiothoracic, ophthalmology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, pharmacology and palliative care.

Neonatology division has been involved in various research and quality improvement projects published in the reputed international and national journals. We have received prestigious research grants from ICMR, DBT, DST, SERB, INCLEN, MITS Alliance, Wellbiome and VGST Karnataka to do research in the field of Neonatology. Neonatology division regularly conducts meeting with Obstetrics department for ‘perinatal audit’ and Pathology department ‘Cause of death assessment’ using MITS (Minimal invasive tissue sampling) and regular autopsy. Regular academic and teaching activities are an integral part of the department like seminars, journal clubs, cased based teachings, simulation sessions etc.

Fellowship candidates will have adequate exposure to clinical management of critically ill neonates which includes resuscitation and management of preterm neonates of 25 weeks of gestation onwards, perioperative care of surgical neonates including cardiac surgery, supervised management of high frequency ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide, high risk follow up etc. They will also have excellent research, academic and teaching opportunities.?

Total duration: One year can be extended to two years if requested by the candidate and permitted by the institution
