The department came into independent existence in 1982 under Dr. P L N G Rao as first head of the department. A referral centre for Karnataka and its neighbouring states since inception, it has progressed consistently since 1992, when the M. Ch (Paediatric Surgery) programme was started.

The department has been on the forefront for its quality patient care, teaching, training and research. The department has contributed significantly in promoting the development of paediatric surgery at the state and regional level. Apart from regular paediatric surgical work, department has grown to be a referral centre for complex genitourinary reconstruction, hepatobiliary surgeries, neonatal surgical anomalies, Paediatric head and neck lesions, Paediatric thoracic lesions, Paediatric tumours and Paediatric minimal access surgery.

The surgeons and the nurses in department are specially trained in the surgical care of infants and children. The department functions in conjunction with the Departments of Paediatrics, Paediatric nephrology, endocrinology and Neonatology to provide comprehensive care to the surgical neonate, infant and child.? The department has all the gadgets and infrastructure to undertake any complex surgery with world class facilities.

The department was the first in Karnataka state to offer super-specialisation course in Paediatric Surgery. It is a three-year residential postgraduate training in the speciality of paediatric surgery leading to the award of a M. Ch degree from the 中国体育彩票app下载 Academy of Higher Education. Currently we have alumni practising across India and Australia.

The department is involved in teaching undergraduate medical students and postgraduates from the departments of general surgery & Paediatrics with activities such as didactic lecture classes, clinical postings & discussions, small group teaching etc. The department regularly organizes as well as takes part in inter-speciality academic activity with other subspecialties such as Paediatric Nephrology, Paediatric Endocrinology, Paediatric Haemato-Oncology, Neonatology, Nuclear Medicine etc as also with the broad specialities of Paediatrics & General Surgery.

The department also conducts & encourages research in surgical problems in children by undergraduates, interns & post graduates.
